The joy of first awakening slowly faded; the scorch of sunlight went unfelt, the tenderness of moonlight unrecognized. Only the solitude of time endured. She heard a thousand murmured sufferings, yet could not reach them; questioned heaven and earth for the reason of birth, yet found no answer.
